Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently,
participate in a team, be well-organised, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic
achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

Opening a door to a great career
"Without a doubt, the ESL teaching
I am doing now is the most satisfying and heart-warming work
I have ever done. And I credit the TESL faculty and management
at George Brown for their academic excellence, their strong personal
support and interest in every student and their eagerness to
assist students in reaching individual TESL goals."
Georgia Guy,
TESL Program Graduate
March 2005

OUR PROGRAM
The TESL program provides a solid grounding in both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching English as a second language to adults. The courses deal with key concepts in phonetics and phonology, linguistics, sociolinguistics, language teaching methods and grammar in the context of teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL). First-semester courses present an overview of the theories and practice of ESL/EFL teaching. Second-semester courses emphasize practical hands-on training in a collaborative setting.
The practical aspects of language teaching are of prime importance, so TESL students do classroom observations and practice teaching in a wide range of English programs at George Brown College. One of the strengths of the TESL program is its practical orientation, which is due to its being an integral part of George Brown’s large, vibrant, innovative ESL department.
Second-semester students have the opportunity to participate in ESL tutoring and other ESL extracurricular activities. Graduates may also apply for a three-week Summer English Camp teaching experience in China as part of a George Brown College professional development initiative.
China Summer Camp
George Brown College in partnership with various Chinese Foreign Language institutions runs a 3 week camp in China providing English language classes for high school students. This is a wonderful opportunity for TESL students to gain Teaching English as a Foreign Language experience and cross-cultural awareness, in addition to perfecting their English language teaching skills in a stimulating environment, at no cost to themselves. |
Note: An undergraduate university degree and excellent English skills are requirements for admission to the TESL program.
