Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently, participate in a team, be well-organized, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

OUR PROGRAM

This program focuses on the skills needed to assemble, install, troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment used by consumers, business and industry. Students learn electronics theory and how to work with circuits and the various components of electronic systems such as capacitors, resistors, semiconductors and amplifiers. The focus is on a broad understanding of the field that students can then apply to specific areas of interest or employment.

This is a Distance Education program in which you complete all courses by studying at home, with an interactive learning package on a personal computer. Laboratory projects and exercises are also carried out in this way. The learning package consists of 23 courses (modules) on a CD-ROM or DVD with text, video, animation, computer-based testing and a computerized simulation of an electronics laboratory. Students also have telephone or e-mail access to a tutor for personal assistance.

You may enrol at any time during the year and complete the modules in the learning package at your own speed. Typical completion time is 32 weeks of part-time study, but there are no time limits.

PREREQUISITES

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (with credits at or above general level) or equivalent or mature student status. An electronics background is helpful but not essential.

FEE

$60 per module, plus $285 for the CD-ROM or DVD (which includes all software and required materials). International applicants are charged the same fees but in U.S. dollars (US$60 plus US$285); the posted exchange rate in effect at the time of your registration will be used to determine the final fee in Canadian dollars. There is no refund on CD-ROM or DVD course materials for this program.

YOUR FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS

Credits from this program may be applied toward the Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program.

You can also transfer credits toward a four-year Bachelor of Science degree offered through George Brown College’s partnership with Athabasca University.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Pentium-based computer or equivalent
  • CD-ROM or DVD drive and sound card
  • minimum 32MB RAM (64MB recommended)
  • minimum 100MB available disk space
  • Windows NT/2000/XP/ME/Vista/7
  • Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail or any other MAPI-compliant application
  • Internet access

YOUR CAREER

Graduates will be prepared to work as service technicians on electronic products and equipment used by consumers, business and industry. Typical activities include assembling, maintaining, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and upgrading equipment and systems.
