OUR PROGRAM
Registered Nurse - Operating Room Perioperative Nursing (Postgraduate) program at George Brown College prepares Registered
Nurses to function competently as team members in an operating room. It offers unique clinical experience on a full-time basis.
The program is organized in two phases. Phase I consists of six weeks of theory, including:
- adherence to ORNAC standards
- relevant anatomy
- principles of asepsis
- duties of the scrub and circulating nurses
- intensive study of surgical interventions, their indications and complications
- laboratory practice
Phase II is an 8-to-10-week practicum. During this time, students rotate through several services (e.g. General Surgery, Gynecology, Urology,
ENT, Orthopedics, Plastics, Ophthalmology). A major essay on a selected surgical topic is required during practicum.
Clinical experiences are scheduled in major Toronto hospitals, or outside the GTA in special circumstances.
Note: Students must meet all medical and legal requirements for this program outlined on the Pre-Placement Health Form. This may take 6
to 8 weeks. To see those requirements go to www.georgebrown.ca/preplacement.
