Makeup students raise money to combat breast cancer
May 28, 2011
Student volunteers from George Brown’s School of Makeup and Esthetics donated their services in late May to help combat breast cancer. The students offered the public a variety of beauty treatments from a temporary salon set up in Toronto’s Kew Gardens in exchange for donations to the cause. The colour of choice for all treatments – including nail polish and eyelashes - was pink, the signature colour of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The effort, on Saturday, May 28, 2011, was part of the seventh annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Yard Sale for the Cure. Across Ontario, 170 yard sales and events took place. Founded in 2005, Yard Sale for the Cure has raised over $850,000 for the Foundation.

Social
Workers Association honours George Brown’s Dean of Community Services and Health Sciences
March 14, 2011 -The Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) has honoured Lorie Shekter-Wolfson, George Brown’s Assistant
Vice-President of Waterfront Development and Dean of the Faculty of Community Services and Health Sciences, naming her an Inspirational Leader
for 2011.
”OASW’s Inspirational Leaders inspire others through their leadership, optimism and innovation in addressing situations/problems, and they
serve as a positive role model for those working in the field of social work,” says Gillian McCloskey, OASW Associate Executive
Director.
Shekter-Wolfson was a social worker at The Toronto Hospital (now known as the University Health Network) for 25 years, and served as Director
of Social Work and Multi-Cultural Health there. She has been an active member of OASW for 35 years, participating on several high-profile
committees, including the Steering Committee on 2008 Social Work National Conference. She has also been a keynote speaker/panelist
at social work events, a regular contributor to the Ontario social work journal/newsletter, OASW Newsmagazine; and a mentor every
year for social work students at the University of Toronto.
It is to her mother, also a social worker, that Shekter-Wolfson credits her inspiration: “I was brought up to believe that you
need to make a difference.” She recently wrote an article in memory of her mother, published in the March 2011 issue of OASW Newsmagazine: “Dorothy
Shekter was a huge influence in my life and without question, the reason I went into social work.”
Shekter-Wolfson joined George Brown as Dean of the Faculty of Community Services and Health Sciences in 2002.
To read a profile of Shekter-Wolfson, as well as her tribute to her mother, go to OASW’s website: http://www.oasw.org/en/publicsite/aboutworkers/lshekterwolfson.asp
The 2011 Inspirational Leader Awards, which are given to two individuals or groups every year, will be presented at OASW’s

National
Ballet ballerina Lois Smith founded George Brown’s School of Dance
February 24, 2011
The National Ballet’s first homegrown prima ballerina who went on to found The George Brown School of Dance in 1975 died in late January
at her home in British Columbia at 81 after a lengthy decline caused by Alzheimer’s. Born Oct. 8, 1929 in Vancouver, Smith did not
begin intensive ballet training until she was 15 but made rapid progress. In the fall of 1951, she became a charter member of the newly formed
National Ballet company and rapidly emerged as a leading dancer – a position she maintained until chronic injury forced her retirement
in 1969. Smith opened her own studio in a Front St. loft before accepting an invitation in 1975 to move her school to George Brown, where
it became the foundation of the institution’s still prospering dance program. Smith retired from George Brown and left Toronto in 1988,
moving back to B.C. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980.

Head
chef found her job on George Brown College’s career website
February 24, 2011
It was just over a year ago that Sheena Yiu arrived from California to launch a new career in Toronto’s hospitality industry. Now
she’s a George Brown Chef School graduate and head chef at a bustling downtown restaurant – thanks, she says, to the college
and its job website – GBCareers.
Yiu, now 22, had graduated from the University
of California at Los Angeles with a degree in Economics and Global Studies – but a part
time job with university food services there helped convince her that cooking was her real calling. She considered cooking schools all over
North America and then chose George Brown for its solid reputation.

Yiu first used GBCareers just days after she started the Culinary Skills- Chef Training program in January 2010. As an international student
she needed to find an on-campus job – and saw a listing for a career centre student ambassador on the site. She applied and was hired
for the position, which involves helping students in the Career Centre and, ironically, helping keep GBCareers up to date with jobs from
employers.
“It’s a really easy platform to go and use, and very student-friendly,” she says.
Since GBCareers was launched in October, 2009 the website had posted more than 3,000 jobs and had more than 10,000 students and alumni register to look
at job listings – adding up to a whopping 126,840 job views. More than half the jobs on the site have been full-time positions for graduates or alumni,
and the rest a combination of part-time, contract or summer jobs.
Towards the end of her program this past summer Yiu was checking new job postings when
she came across one for her current job – as head chef at
Steamy’s Asian Grill on Spadina Avenue near Richmond Street West. She applied, was interviewed three times, did a cooking demonstration, and landed
the job. Now she spends every evening hard at work in the busy kitchen – created Asian fusion and Canadian menu items.
A recent survey of employers who used the site found two thirds went on to interview a George Brown student and one third offered them a
job, says Career Services Manager Bob Eichvald.
