Alumni success began at George Brown
It's always a proud moment when our graduates are publicly acknowledged for their accomplishments. Several George Brown alumni were recently recognized for outstanding contributions to the community.
Jamie Kennedy renowned chef, restaurateur and local food advocate became the first George Brown graduate named to the Order of Canada. Information Technology pioneer Dennis Niebergal and celebrity chef Mark McEwan were among six recipients to be honoured with a Premier's Award for their leadership roles in technology and the arts.
It's equally gratifying when alumni give back by creating scholarships that help current students. Successful alumni are powerful role models for George Brown students and their support is inspiring. |

"I had a Commerce degree from McGill and enjoyed my job at the time, but on weeknights and weekends I was always cooking," she remembers. "On the way home one evening I walked past the College and decided ‘I'm going to culinary school!'"
While completing the Chef Training program at the Chef School, Lauren was connected to the mental health non-profit FAME (Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere) by one of her GBC instructors, Christine Walker.

Restaurateur Jamie Kennedy is first graduate named to Order of Canada
Renowned chef, restaurateur and local food advocate Jamie Kennedy has become the first George Brown graduate named to the Order of Canada. Kennedy was named a Member of the Order of Canada in late December 2010 by Governor-General David Johnston. His work promoting local, organically grown food was cited in the announcement of 54 new honourees of the Order. The Order of Canada is one of Canada's highest civilian honours. It was established in 1967 to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last 40 years, more than 5, 000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order. Retired George Brown professor Lois Smith, founder of George Brown's dance program and former National Ballet dancer, is also a Member of the Order of Canada. |
