Industry & Community
The business community supports us in a number of ways. Some companies
and associations provide monetary awards to students to help them continue
their education. Many companies contribute by providing employment opportunities.
We have over 250 employers who participate in our co-op program, providing
valuable on-the-job experience to students in many of our business and
financial services programs.
Advisory boards, composed of senior industry executives, provide us
with direction and insight to keep our programs up-to-the-minute with
industry trends and standards.
We also work with academic and industry organizations such as the Canadian
Securities Institute, the Certified General Accountants Association
of Ontario, the Institute of Canadian Bankers, the Financial Planners
Standards Council and the Canadian Insurance Self Regulatory Organization
to ensure our graduates meet the standards for professional designations
in their fields.

Placements/Co-operative Education
Co-operative education is an important component of many of the programs at
George Brown College. Students spend at least one four-month term working
full-time in a job related to their field of study. Co-op is intended to
give students a chance to apply the knowledge they have gained in the program
in a real-life, hands-on situation, giving them practical experience and
further developing their skills. Students also get a chance to gain important
work experience and to establish contacts with potential employers. Many
graduates of co-op programs find full-time employment with their co-op employer.
"The postgraduate Business Marketing Analysis
coop has provided me with an inspiring and challenging
position at United Way's 2003 campaign. The experience
as a sponsored employee has been invaluable. I have
acquired many new skills and had the opportunity to
network with new people from all industries. I have
also utilized many aspects of my marketing diploma,
especially public speaking skills which were an integral
part of our curriculum.
During my coop, I have encountered many surprises regarding the United Way.
Not only does it help people in need by addressing the root causes of their
problems but provides everyday services to support all members of the community,
not only the hungry and the homeless. By providing these essential social
services and programs, United Way is creating a better community for us all."
