Closed Captioning

When videos are accessed on the World Wide Web, they may also have captions that are

Closed Captioning appears only when the user agent (e.g., a media viewer player) supports them. All video files in the Media Files section are in Windows Media Video (.wmv) format and can be streamed via Windows Media Player. *

Versions of Windows Media Player that support Closed Captioning Closed Captioning logo are:

  • * Windows Media Player 9 Series - This is the preferred version for Closed Captioning on the George Brown College web site and can be downloaded at Microsoft’s Download Center.

  • Windows Media Player 10 and higher

If you do not already have a version of Windows Media Player, or if you need to upgrade from an earlier version, please visit Microsoft’s Download Center and follow the instructions to install the player.

Instructions on how to view Closed Captioning in Windows Media Player 9 Series

PLEASE NOTE: If you have a higher version of Media Player and you'd like to revert back to the Version 9 Series, uninstall your existing version using Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and choose Windows Media Player from the list of programs and click the Change/Remove button to uninstall. Then reinstall Media Player 9 Series from Microsoft’s Download Center.

The following screenshots will help you adjust the settings in your Windows Media Player 9 Series so that you will be able to view Closed Captioning.

Step 1

When Windows Media Player launches, select:

  1. Play
  2. Captions and Subtitles
  3. English

Instructions on how to view Closed Captioning in Windows Media Player 11 or higher

The following screenshots will help you adjust the settings in your Windows Media Player so that you will be able to view Closed Captioning.

Step 1

When Windows Media Player launches, select:

  1. Play
  2. Lyrics, Captions, and Subtitles
  3. On if Available

Step 2

Select:

  1. Tools
  2. Options

Step 3

Select:

  1. Security
  2. Show local captions when present (ensure this is checked)
  3. Apply, then
  4. OK

To adjust the size of the video in Windows Media Player, click View -> Video size -> then choose a size value (see sample screenshot in a separate browser window).
