Sheilagh's area of specialty is Community Health Nursing. Her Nursing Research explored "The Lived Experience of Nurses working in Canada's Northern Isolated Communities". Additional interests include promoting the employment of Internationally Educated Nurses, and management of acute childhood Asthma.

Iris completed her Doctorate studies from the University of Toronto in 2007. Using arts inform qualitative methods Iris thesis focused on the perspectives and responses of children with cancer on a specialized camp. Iris has also taught several courses in the undergraduate programs; these include courses in nursing ethics and community nursing.

Current Teaching Assignments/ Projects:
Primary curriculum focus includes nursing research, design, application and measurement. Proficiency with SPSS software for statistical analysis, and SPSS text analysis for surveys. Involved in the development of a Hub of Excellence for rural and remote areas of Ontario in e-learning for nurses. Co-lead investigator to evaluate the project.

Starting September 2007 Janice will return to the collaborative nursing program, in Year 4, following a four year secondment in the Department of Academic Excellence.

Professional Service / Professional Organizations:
Janice has participated in various committees and contract positions at the College of Nurses of Ontario and is a member with RNAO. As an independent business, she conducts workshops for students to help prepare them to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Exam. Janice also works as a staff nurse with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Areas of Specialty / Research / Scholarship:
Janice has taught in various nursing programs and courses at George Brown for 25 years. Her interests include neonatology, pediatrics, standards of practice, entry to practice and CRNE preparation. Janice is the co-author of Mosby's Guide to Short Answer Questions on the CRNE (2006), Mosby's Prep Guide for the Canadian RN Exam (2007), and is co-editor of Mosby's Canadian Comprehensive Review of Nursing, second edition (2003), and the third edition to be published in 2008.

Member of the Scholarly Activity committee at GBC. American Association Of Critical Care Nurses. Bioethics Society.

Areas of Specialty / Research / Scholarship:
Anita's clinical expertise is in Critical Care nursing- Med-Surg ICU, Transplant and patients with MOSF. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the ICU, Anita enjoyed sharing her knowledge with new and seasoned nurses. Her academic focus is in clinical Ethics and transcultural nursing. Anita has volunteered as a nurse overseas and enjoyed the experience tremendously.

Susan's areas of interest are oncology/palliative care, social support, and community health nursing. She has been a nursing professor at George Brown College since September 2002. Prior, she has gained experience in various nursing roles including a nurse manager of a surgical oncology inpatient unit as well as a clinical nurse specialist oncology/palliative care. Since October 2002 (to present) she has been appointed to the Review Board of CONJ (Canadian Oncology Journal).

Sue Phillips, RN

Currently as a Nursing Professor in the 3rd year (Community) of the Ryerson,  Centennial and George Brown College, Collaborative Nursing Degree Program Sue Phillips sparks each student to become an extra-ordinary nurse by acquiring an  understanding of the new and ever changing World of Health Care.  This includes interprofessional education for collaborative patient centered practice (IECPCP) and the integration and appreciation of complementary/alternative (non-traditional) therapies with the traditional health care services and treatments, in order to meet the expectations of the public and health sciences.

As a Registered Nurse, with a Master's in Adult Education Sue is keen to share some 35 years of her experience in Nursing including Mental Health, Forensic Mental Health, Community Nursing and Nursing Education with students and interdisciplinary colleagues.

In 2007 co-authored, with colleagues from the Collaborative Degree Program, presentations on Reflective Practice including 'Expressing Voice and Developing Practical Wisdom and Social Justice through Art' for the 13th International Reflective Practice Conference in Denmark.

Currently teaching Year 1 Nursing Theory and acting as a faculty advisor for Year 3 Community Health Nursing Practice. Patricia is developing a Community/Mental Health nursing curriculum for the Bridging RPN to BScN program. Her current George Brown College committee work includes membership on:

  • the Faculty Performance Review Pilot Project,
  • the Simulated Practice Planning Committee,
  • the Academic Strategy Extended Communication Team,
  • and the Scholarly Activity Committee.

Patricia is a project member on 'The Street-Involved Youth Study' (a Ryerson University/St. Michael's Hospital/Community Youth Service Provider Agency collaborative project), funded by Wellesley Central Urban Health Research.

Current Teaching Assignments/ Projects:
Primary curriculum focus includes first year "Assessment of the Healthy Individual" as well as faculty advisor for 4th year students in the clinical setting. At this time Frances is a participating research investigator exploring the use of simulation and its relationship to anxiety in the clinical setting. Frances is also involved in the curriculum development of a cardiac course with the Hospital for Sick Children. She is a member of the Scholarly Activity Committee and The Professional Development sub committee In September of 2008 she will begin a 2 year role as faculty advisor for CNSA (Canadian Nurses Student Association) at the George Brown site.

Areas of Specialty / Research / Scholarship:
Frances has taught in various nursing programs and courses during her career. Her primary focus has been in paediatrics and health assessment. Other areas of interest include College of Nurses education and clinical simulation. Frances has been a reviewer for Canadian content in various nursing text books.

Sandy joined George Brown in 2002 after a long career in both critical care and Gerontological nursing. Her most recent area of interest / research is in identifying predictors of student success and targeting / implementing initiatives which support student success in nursing. Sandy chairs the Student Recognition and Support Committee for the School of Nursing, whose mandate is to develop, coordinate and evaluate activities related to student awards and recognition and services that support students. One of Sandy's major goals is to establish a means to publicly recognize, support and honour academic and clinical excellence as well as leadership among students within the School of Nursing.
