How To Find A Place To Live

This guide is also available in .pdf - print format

Although George Brown has no student residence, Toronto is a huge city with a wide array of accommodations for students.

TYPES OF HOUSING FOR GEORGE BROWN STUDENTS

  • Rent rooms or flats in private houses.
  • Share a rented multi-room apartment or house with other students.
  • Rent your own apartment.
  • Live in a college/university or independent student residence such as Neill-Wycik Co-op College or Best Western Toronto's Primrose Hotel/Residence.

COSTS
Sharing with other students can cost $400 to $600 a month in rent. Apartments cost $550 to $700 for a bachelor (one room plus kitchen and bathroom) and well over $1,000 for big apartments. Housing downtown tends to be more expensive than outlying areas. Parking is expensive near George Brown campuses, so public transportation is a good bet. A monthly Metropass offering unlimited travel on Toronto subways, buses and streetcars currently costs $99 or $107 a month.

TIMING
Start looking for a place to live two months before the start of classes. That means looking in July for September classes. Be prepared to spend a couple of days for viewing locations.

HOW TO FIND A PLACE: THE HOUSING REGISTRY
George Brown provides a listing of available student housing called the Housing Registry that we share with The University of Toronto and Ryerson University. Use of the Registry costs $5. Landlords also post listings directly with the Housing Department.

Listings are available starting mid-June and can be seen at:

Housing Office, 200 King St. E., 113 (basement), St. James Campus

Counselling Office, 160 Kendal Ave., Room C317,
