George Brown College School of Work and College Preparation Programs

Our college preparation program and work preparation studies at the George Brown College School of Work and College Preparation will assist you in getting the education you need or the job you’re looking for.

The George Brown College School of Work and College Preparation offers:

  • Skills upgrading in English, math or science for the pursuit of education or work in English and in ASL
  • “Pre” programs – two-semester certificate programs in Business, Health Sciences, Community Services and Hospitality Services 
  • Programs for people who have experienced mental health issues and/or addictions histories to prepare them for work re-entry or further education
  • Programming that assists high school graduates who have faced academic challenges to upgrade their workplace entry skills

WORK AND COLLEGE PREPARATION PROGRAMS

Following are brief descriptions of the programs:

Academic Upgrading - A737 - Academic Upgrading is a free full-time day program for students who need to improve their reading, writing, math, computer, and study skills. Upgrading prepares students for post-secondary study, further skills training, or employment. Students are placed according to assessment results and academic or employment goals in Literacy and Basic Skills Level 4, Level 5, or ACE (Academic and Career Entrance). Courses in science are also offered at the ACE level. Students are provided with advising services and may be eligible for transportation allowance. The program runs year round and has a monthly intake. Find out more about Academic Upgrading

Literacy and Basic Skills Program for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Adults - A738 - George Brown College is a leader in education and educational services for deaf and hard-of-hearing people. This is the only college program of its kind in Toronto, with all courses taught in American Sign Language (ASL). The program is for those deaf and hard-of-hearing students who want to upgrade their English, math and computer literacy skills for further education and/or employment. College Vocational – A101 – The College Vocational program is an individualized, supportive program to help bridge the gap for students who have graduated from high school with workplace credits or an Ontario Secondary School Certificate and who are having difficulty finding appropriate and meaningful work. It offers extensive assessment through the use of several vocational tools. In addition, students participate in career planning, communication and life skills training, and a work experience placement.  Find out more about College Vocational

Pre-Health Science – A102 - The Pre-Health Science program will prepare students to perform at a level that will assist them in gaining entry to a Health Sciences program at George Brown College, including Practical Nursing. It also gives students a basic understanding of social sciences and human relations, to help them relate to people at college in further studies and at work in health care institutions or with health care providers. Throughout this program, students study biology, chemistry and physics. Other courses include applied math, communications and computer literacy. Find out more about Pre-Health Science

Pre-Community Services – A103 - The Pre-Community Services program provides opportunities for students to develop skills for admission to a number of Community Services programs at George Brown College. Students gain an overview of the helping field, including roles and systemic issues, and a theoretical basis through courses in sociology and psychology. A strong emphasis on learning in groups encourages co-operation, teamwork and mutual support. Find out more about Pre-Community Services

Pre-Business – A146 - This program provides upgrading opportunities and exposure to a broad cross-section of business fields. This unique program offers a strong foundation in business, marketing and accounting, and upgrading courses in math, English and general education. On graduation, you will be well-prepared to develop your career plans, or to continue on to further education at the School of Business. Find out more about Pre-Business

Hospitality Services - H101- Successful completion of this program academically qualifies people for entry into programs in Hospitality & Tourism Management and the George Brown Chef School. These programs are: Hotel Management, Food and Beverage Management, Culinary Management, Chef Training, and Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure and Special Events Planning. The program is closely linked to operators of recognized hotels, restaurants and catering companies in Toronto, and includes an industry externship for qualified students. Assistant Cook Extended Training (ACET) - A105- This unique program offers people with mental health and addiction histories, who see work as part of the recovery process, the choice and the opportunity to receive training and employment in the food service industry. The goal of the program is to help people recovering from addiction and mental health problems take the first steps toward a job in Toronto's food service industry. This program is free for participants - with costs covered by the Ontario government. Find out more about Assistant Cook Extended Training

Redirection Through Education (For You) - C701 - The Redirection Through Education - For You program is a dynamic, experiential psycho-educational group program for adults currently coping with the impact of mental or emotional health challenges. The program offers individuals opportunities to enhance their skill level in coping, problem-solving and general functioning as members of their community. The program offers a safe, structured environment in which individuals may explore their current strengths and set goals for a productive, self-directed future. Redirection Through Education (Work Entry) - C702- Redirection Through Education (RTE) is a supported education program that provides students with a mental health history the opportunity to assess their readiness for full-time school or work. Students can enroll in credit courses, such as English, Computer Skills, Speaking with Confidence, Contemporary Issues in Adult Development, Strategies for Student Success, and the Psychology of Human Relations. Vocational testing is offered to help students determine their interests and aptitudes, and a work placement experience allows students to test out possible careers as well as their readiness to return to work. Construction Craft Worker Extended Training - A106 - The Construction Craft Worker Extended Training (CCWET) program is a new Augmented Education program at George Brown College launched in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
