Adaptive Technology

Adaptive Technology

"To be effective, adaptive technology must not only foster independence and autonomy but also contribute to a positive identity and enhanced self-esteem"
- Dr. Marcia J. Scherer,
Author of Living in the State of Stuck
(How Technology Impacts the Lives of People with Disabilities).

The use of adaptive technology is to improve the quality of life of those with disabilities.

For most people computers are tools for doing more work faster. However, for persons with disabilities who may be blind, have cerebral palsy or quadriplegia or are learning disabled, computers often represent the difference between getting a job done or not being able to do it at all. Adaptive technology, hardware and software devices designed to overcome specific limitations, increase productivity of persons with disabilities while the Internet supported by this technology, connects many to the outside world.

The terms adaptive technology and assistive technology are often used interchangeably. Assistive technology is the umbrella under which adaptive technology devices falls. Assistive technology devices not only include computer adaptive software/ hardware and communication aids but also include such aids and devices for daily living, mobility, recreation, and transportation. This web site will focus on the computer software/hardware technology commonly used by persons with disabilities who want to use computers or who already use computers and need product information.

This web site will explore disabilities types, adaptive technology types, and the corresponding adaptive devices and software that are used by persons with disabilities today.
