What’s Happening in Organizational and Staff Development?

October 26, 2011 - Supporting. Learning.

Please join us for a day of exciting keynotes and workshops at the St James Campus that focus on supporting learning!

Keynote Speaker: Jenny Horsman (9:00am-10:15am)
Rethinking college practices: Acknowledging the impact of violence on learning

Everyday experiences of violence – from the mildest to the most catastrophic - impact learning, and the learning failure that often follows has its own ongoing impact on lives. As we work with students in any capacity – helping them to get into a program, navigate college systems, deal with difficulties they encounter, teach them new material, or support them in any way, if we pay attention to these impacts then we can approach their difficulties learning and navigating the college with a fresh perspective.

Concurrent Workshops (10:30am- 12:00pm)
Topics include: Copyright, Smart Board Basics, Supporting ESL Learners, and Presentation Skills

Stand Up For Mental Health – Comic Troupe (1:00pm – 2:00pm)
Stand Up For Mental Health, and its award winning founder David Granirer, teach stand up comedy to people with mental illness as a way of building their confidence and fighting public stigma, prejudice, and discrimination.
“We use comedy to give consumers a powerful voice and help reduce the stigma and discrimination around mental illness” says Granirer. “The idea is that laughing at our setbacks raises us above them. It makes people go from despair to hope, and hope is crucial to anyone struggling with adversity. Studies prove that hopeful people are more resilient and also tend to live longer, healthier lives.”

Concurrent Workshops (2:15pm-3:45pm)
Topics include: Internationalization of the Curriculum: Developing Global Citizens, Creating Accessible Learning Environments: Tips for Reducing Barriers for students in the classroom, Supporting Students to Succeed: Addressing the impact of violence on learning, Smart Board: Beyond Basics, and Understanding Deaf Culture
