Interactive Booths
This year's Festival of Learning brought together faculty, support staff and administrators from across the college. It was a chance for staff to enjoy, among other things, some of the services offered by our Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics, or a glass of sparkling wine served up by the Centre for Hospitality & Culinary Arts' Doris Miculan-Bradley. The Festival also showcased some of the work and research done by staff and students at the college. [View photos... ]
Keynote Speaker
The keynote speaker for the day was Erin Gruwell. Erin was made famous when her experiences of teaching at-risk teens at a Los Angeles high school were turned into the Hollywood film "The Freedom Writers." She began the day by meeting with a class of high school students, who presented her with a journal where they shared their own life and learning experiences. Erin recounted many of her own teaching experiences to a packed gymnasium of GBC staff. Picking up on the importance of kindness in Michael Cooke's words of introduction, Erin ended her speech with an emotional plea to educators to not forget the importance of compassion in their teaching. Team to Team Awards
The Team-To-Team awards garnered a lot of attention at the Festival of Learning this year. This was a chance for the different parts of the GBC community to acknowledge the work done by members of other departments and centres. Michael Cooke presented awards to each of the recipients. Douglas Chaddock, Managing Director, Syndications Canada Inc., ended the formal part of the day with a speech that highlighted the important contribution of George Brown College students in a research project that saw the partnership between his company and the college's Centre for Construction & Engineering Technologies. CHCA Workshop: Five Essential Strategies
Fall Intersession Week 2009
As part of the autumn intersession week, the Staff Development Department facilitated an open space technology forum for The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. The School’s faculty joined with faculty from the Chef’s School to discuss issues such as classroom management, developing teaching resources, developing a balanced curriculum, and creating active learning strategies to engage students in the classroom.
The faculty shared their ideas, which were then incorporated into a series of recommendations that will form the basis of the School’s “Five Essential Strategies” plan.
